Murders, ethnic clash spoil ‘peaceful’ Xmas

Posted on The National
POLICE have reported three murder cases and an ethnic clash in Port Moresby and Central on Christmas Eve – in an otherwise “peaceful” celebration.
Assistant Commissioner Donald Yamasombi, the police commander for the National Capital District and Central, said generally the people had “a peaceful Christmas celebration attending churches and having family parties in their villages and houses”.
He said a man died at Kivori village in Kairuku district of Central during a family Christmas party when an intruder stormed into the home, started a fight and cut man’s hand.
Police believe that the man fled to Port Moresby after the incident.
Yamasombi said another man died after he was thrown head-first into a drain at Kaugere.
“He was allegedly drunk and was heading to his house without knowing that his relatives were involved in a fight with others,” he said.
He said the man was grabbed and thrown head-first into a drain.
The third death was of a woman whose body was found hanging from a tree inside her family compound.
“But we are not ruling out that she was killed because during the day, she had an argument with her husband,” Yamasombi said.
“She then went away and returned late in the evening.
“And in the night her body was found hanging from the tree inside her premises.”
The ethnic clash at the ATS settlement at 8-Mile resulted in three people being injured.
“There will be a mediation today (between the groups) at the Gordon police station,” Yamasombi said.
