Women Dies In Suspected GBV
ANOTHER young woman is dead in Port Moresby who relatives claim is the victim of Gender Based Violence (GBV).
NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’Dranou said yesterday police are treating her death as suspicious due to her injuries and have detained her partner at the police lock-up.
Her unfortunate death comes a month after the brutal killing of another young woman Grace Gavera in late November allegedly by her partner in Port Moresby’s Erima suburb.
In the latest case, distraught relatives named the victim as 20-year-old Solange Aiva Aitsi of Kairuku and Kerema parentage.
Ms Aitsi was allegedly attacked by her partner over an argument that erupted at a family Christmas gathering on December 25, 2018.
On that fateful day after a family get together, the couple had an argument and her mother-in-law on witnessing the argument, called Solange’s mother to tell her what was happening.
The victim’s mother headed over to the couple’s residence which is at a Hohola church and tried to take her away in fear for her safety.
However, Solange is reported to have told her mum she would talk things over with her husband.
About 12 midnight, Solange’s mother reported receiving a phone call informing her that her daughter was dead.
A witness, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that on that evening, the husband with other youths residing in the church were seen dragging Solange out of the bathroom.
When asked what they were doing; the husband said that Solange had attempted suicide in the bathroom.
However in another statement, the husband is reported to have said that after arguing he left Solange and came back around 8pm to find her hanging on a mango tree with a laplap tied around her neck.
The man is said to have rushed her to Port Moresby General Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Her body was returned to the church centre. Relatives who saw her body claim she was seen to have had head and facial injuries, bruises on her knees and legs.
After a plea from his mother, the husband turned himself up to the police for questioning.
According to family and friends, the couple has been known to have had a turbulent relationship with Solange suffering physically and verbally on social media.
Solange’s family intervened and stopped the relationship but after the husband turned to a new religion, all seemed fined.
The couple got married on November 2018 after a two years relationship.
Solange a devout Catholic, adopted her husband’s religious faith and became a youth advocate and early childhood educator.
The husband is in police custody awaiting a post-mortem to confirm her cause of death.
